Some Lesser Known Facts About Ashwani Kumar
Ashwani Kumar was born in a middle-class Punjabi family. According to one source, his father passed away when he was young.
According to another source, his father is well and young.
His mother raised him as a single parent and encouraged him to play cricket.
He once suffered a serious injury, after which he received treatment and took almost a year to return to the cricket ground.

He made his first-class debut for Punjab in 2019 and his Ranji Trophy debut in 2021.
Mumbai Indians (MI) scouts first spotted him during the 2024 Sher-e-Punjab Trophy, where they were impressed by his ability to bowl wide yorkers in death overs.

He refused a job offer in 2024 that would have given him enough financial stability but required him to leave cricket and move out of Punjab.
In 2024, he was a member of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) squad but didn’t play in any match.
In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, the Mumbai Indians acquired him for his base price of Rs 30 lakhs.
His father said he used to give Kumar Rs 30 to go to the nearby stadium. He used to go around 5 am and practice the entire day and come back around 10 pm.
His bowling speed is around 135-140 kph (84-87 mph). He can bowl yorkers and back-of-the-hand slower ball variations.
He became the first player to take 4 wickets on his IPL debut. On 31 March 2025, he took 4 wickets for 24 runs against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), which included popular batsmen Ajinkya Rahane , Manish Pandey , Rinku Singh , and Andre Russell .

Former cricketer Sanvir Singh claimed that he talked to Ashwani Kumar before the tournament when Kumar told him that 3 wickets under 30 runs would have been his dream debut in the IPL.
Ashwani Kumar said after the match that he was tense before the match, did not eat the meal and had only one banana.
He started cricket wearing canvas shoes. So, his father often helped him with sports shoes. When he was selected in the IPL, he distributed cricket kits in the nearby villages.
After Kumar made his debut, his teammate Ryan Rickelton said that he was much faster than the expectations.
