Vignesh Puthur liked playing cricket from a young age and played with children in his neighbourhood.

He initially bowled medium pace and spin, but a local cricketer Mohammed Sherif told him to switch to leg spin.
He didn’t know anything about chinaman, but joined the Malappuram District Cricket Academy at the age of 14 years where he learnt the basics under a local coach Vijayan.

He later played for Jolly Rovers Cricket in the Kerala College Premier T20 league.

He later played age-group cricket for different Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) teams.

In the first season of the Kerala Premier League (KPL) in 2024, he took 2 wickets in 3 matches for Alleppey Ripples where Mumbai Indians (MI) scouts saw him.
He later attended trials for the MI but bowled only 1 over in the first trial to Hardik Pandya . However, Mahela Jayawardene was impressed with his bowling.

Jayawardene relaxed him and told him to focus on his skill and technique. Vignesh Puthur later attended 2 more trials for MI.
In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, MI acquired him for his base price of Rs 30 lakhs.

While the auction was being done, he turned off the TV and went to sleep as he thought he would not get selected and might become a net bowler for MI.
One of his friends called him and informed him about his selection, but he did not believe it and searched and found his name on the website.
He said in an interview that he was influenced by the Indian cricketer Kuldeep Yadav , but had a different action.
