Controversies ā€¢ In June 2014, he made a tweet in which he said: ā€œWith the exception of womenā€™s reservation in Parliament, Modi government agenda is inspiring. Dread the day when womenā€™s reservation becomes reality.ā€ He was later labelled misogynist for this tweet.


ā€¢ In 2017, Surya was one of the organizers of the controversial ā€˜Mangalore Chaloā€™ rally in which BJP workers from across Karnataka rode bikes to Mangalore to protest the killing of RSS workers in Dakshina Kannada district.

ā€¢ In another tweet on 21 March 2019, he said that upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections are a test of common man's patriotism and labelled those persons who voted for Modi as nationalists and those who didn't as anti-nationalists and anti-India people.

ā€¢ He reportedly said that the ideology of the two mainstream left parties in India; CPI(M) and CPI ā€“ was ā€œanti-national.ā€

ā€¢ He hit the headlines in November 2024 after he shared a false news on social media in which it was claimed that a farmer from Karnataka had killed himself after the Waqf Board forcibly took over his farmland. Investigations later revealed that the farmer, who was named in the social media post, had died in 2022 due to crop failure and losses. Thereafter, an FIR was lodged against him for misinformation.
