In an interview, Soubin Shahir, shed light on his initial career aspirations in the Malayalam film industry. According to him, he decided to work as an assistant director not with the intention to earn a salary but with the passion to grasp the subtle intricacies of the field. He had his sights set on becoming a chief associate director, acknowledging that he had a considerable amount to learn before achieving that goal. Soubin, in the interview, said,
I joined as an assistant director but was told never to look at it as a salaried job. It was always about learning the nuances. The hope then was to become the chief associate director one day. there was still a lot left to learn. So more than becoming a director one day, the aim was to just become an associate director. It was during this phase that I was approached to act in films like Annayum rasoolumm (2013). However, I had this feeling that I should direct films. So I decided to take a break from acting. I was just going with the flow.â
In February 2022, Soubin took to Instagram to reminisce about his time as an assistant director. In a heartfelt post, he shared a memorable anecdote about his first clapboard experience, which happened to be with the esteemed Indian actor K. P. A. C. Lalitha. Soubin expressed deep admiration for her exceptional acting skills and considered himself fortunate to have the opportunity to share the screen with her in a film titled âDjinn.â

In July 2022, Soubin Shahir became the subject of a series of defamatory posts on Indian filmmaker Omar Lulu âs Facebook profile. These posts, along with some screenshots, created an uproar among the netizens, prompting the quick removal of these from Luluâs Facebook wall. After the incident, Omar apologised to Soubin Shahir and the general public through a Facebook post, assuring that neither he nor his team had any prior knowledge of these troubling developments.
