Some Lesser Known Facts About Sheikh Abdul Latif
Latif played under the coach Syed Abdul Rahim and participated in the 1952, 1956, and 1960 Summer Olympics for the Indian team.
In 1959, he led the national team in the pre-Olympics and Merdeka tournaments.
During his playing days, Latif idolized the Indian football legend Syed Abdus Samad.
In 1960, Latif was denied the captaincy for the Rome Olympics and was replaced by PK Banerjee as captain. Latif got so upset from this incident that he later migrated to Pakistan with his family and played for the Pakistan national football team.
Maidan, a Bollywood film released on 11 April 2024, is based on the life of an Indian football coach named Syed Abdul Rahim  (portrayed by Ajay Devgn ). The film highlights the achievements of the Indian national football team under his mentorship during the 1950s and early 1960s, an era often termed ‘the golden era of Indian football.’ Many Indian footballers, including Sheikh Abdul Latif, were part of these achievements.
