Controversies • He is among the accused in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.

• He was booked for his alleged involvement in the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots and also rapped under the National Security Act in September 2013. However, he was later given a clean chit.

• Sangeet Som has been an anti-beef campaigner for years now. However, a report in The Hindu said he co-founded a firm called "Al Dua" in 2005-06 and was associated with it till around 2008 as Director. The firm is a large-scale exporter of Halal-meat. The company exported halal buffalo meat, lamb meat, goat meat, and hides.

• In October 2017, he raised many eyebrows by calling Taj Mahal a blot on Indian culture and history. His comments came days after the Uttar Pradesh government dropped Taj Mahal from the state tourism booklet.

• After the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he had war of words with former Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan who lost the Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha seat in the elections. Following his defeat in the elections, Balyan brought his differences with Sangeet Som in the public forum and accused him of working against the party and helping the Smajwadi Party candidate to win the Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha. Sangeet Som later criticised Balyan and said that he should not have bring their differences to the public forum, and instead raised his concerns at the party forum. check sources
