He was born in New York City and grew upĀ outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
His father,Ā Robert Swan Mueller II,Ā worked for the DuPont Corporation in New York. His father had also served in the Second World WarĀ in the U.S. Navy. Robert Swan Mueller II died at the age of 91 on December 26, 2007, in Boston.
According to the New York Times, he graduated from the same class ofĀ St. Paulās School asĀ former Secretary of State John Kerry.

During his schooling at theĀ St. Paulās School, he was captain of the Soccer, Hockey, and Lacrosse teams. In 1962, he was declared the top athlete of his school and was awarded the āGordon Medal.ā

Like his father, Robert Mueller also attended Princeton University.
His mother, Alice C. Truesdale, was the daughter of Rail Road Executive William H. Truesdale. She had died a year before his fatherās death.
In 1968, he was enlistedĀ in the United States Marine Corps. In an interview, he revealed that his decision of joining the Marine Corps was under the influence ofĀ his teammate David Spencer Hackettās death in the Vietnam War.

Ā In 1973, after receiving his Law Degree, he worked as a litigator at the firm Madison, Pillsbury, and Sutro in Francisco until 1976.
HeĀ served for 12 years in the United States Attorney offices in different capacities. He started his attorney services by joiningĀ the US Attorneyās office in the Northern District of California in 1976.

From 1998 to 2001, he served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California.
On July 5, 2001,Ā George W. Bush (the then US President) nominated himĀ for the position of FBI Director. He officially became the FBI Director on September 4, 2001, just one week before the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
In May 2011, Barack Obama (the then US President) extended his term of FBI Director for an additional 2 years; as the normal term of FBI Director spans for 10-years only.

Mueller is considered the longest-servingĀ FBI Director since J. Edgar Hoover. He is also the firstĀ FBI Director to be appointed to serve an additional two years after his 10-year term expired.
After his FBI stint, Mueller served for one yearĀ as a consulting professor at the Stanford University.Ā
In 2016,Ā United States Military Academy honored him with āThayer Awardā for public service.
On May 17, 2017,Ā Rod Rosenstein (Deputy Attorney General) appointed himĀ as special counsel for the United States Department of Justice toĀ oversee the investigation involving the Russian interference in the 2016 United States Presidential Elections.
On March 22, 2019, he submittedĀ his report to Attorney General William Barr.
After the release of the special counselā final report by the Department of Justice on April 18, 2019, Mueller officially resigned his post on May 29, 2019, and the Office of the Special Counsel was closed.
In July 2019, in more than five hours of testimony before two congressional panels, Robert Mueller said his investigation of Russiaās interference in the 2016 US presidential election did not exonerate Donald Trump of obstruction of justice, as the president has claimed.
