Some Lesser Known Facts About Navneet Aditya Waiba
Navneet’s ancestors belonged to Palpa in Nepal but had settled in the Ambootia Tea estate village (near Kurseong) that falls in India.
Navneet grew up seeing her mother, Hira Devi Waiba (the first woman to record a Tamang Selo song) singing and being trained by her grandfather, Singh Man Singh Waiba in Nepali folk music.
She comes from a family of musicians. Her ancestors passed on Nepali folk music to their generations. Following this custom, Navneet’s mother, Hira Devi Waiba, trained her in Nepali folk singing right from her childhood days.
Her songs are based on Nepali folk, Tamang Selo, Maruni, Sorathi, and Madalay music genres.
Navneet is famous for being one of the very rare Nepali folk singers, who have kept the Nepali folk music genre alive in its traditional form by not mixing any modern musical instruments in it.
Before choosing a career in Nepali folk music, she worked in Hong Kong as a senior air hostess at Cathy Pacific Airlines.
Navneet started singing professionally after her mother’s death in 2011. She and her brother decided to continue their mother’s vision of preserving and promoting the Nepali folk music culture.
In 2017, she launched her first music album, ‘Ama Lai Shraddhanjali – Tribute to Mother,’ to commemorate her mother’s art and contribution to Nepali folk music. This album has 7 popular songs of Hira Devi Waiba, sung in the voice of Navneet Aditya Waiba. Her brother is the producer of this album.

On 21 May 2023, Navneet, following her mother’s footsteps, established a centre to conduct events and perform live Nepali folk cultural performances of music and dance. This centre is called the ‘Hira Devi Waiba Pratishthan.’ Here, she performs live shows with the popular Nepal-based band ‘Kutumba.’ The centre’s vision is to preserve Nepal’s heritage dance and music.
In the Nepali folk music genre, Navneet and her brother are the only music artists considered authentic for keeping it simple and raw, as it existed in the villages of Nepal before modernization.
