In her childhood, various singers used to visit her home as her father was working in Lok Sampark Vibhag. After watching them perform, she developed an interest in singing.
At a very young age, Amarjot, along with her sister Inderjeet, started performing in various Lok Sampark dramas.
She then started learning the basics of music from her sister and brother-in-law.
Amarjot performed with the Punjabi singer Amir Singh Rana and his sister in various stage shows.
Later, she did her training in music under Ustad Jaswant Singh.

She then performed on stage with the Punjabi singers Rangilla and Karnail Gill.
She worked with various Punjabi singers. Some of her songs with the Punjabi singer Pyara Singh Panchi are “Ajj Parcha Science Da Mera,” and “Kachi Nind Na Jageye.”
At that time, the Punjabi singer Kuldeep Manak was very popular. Amarjot got an opportunity to perform with him. One of their songs which became quite popular was “Ik Tu Hove Ik Main Hova.”

However, after the rumours of Amarjot and Kuldeep’s affair started, Kuldeep’s wife asked Kuldeep to stop working with Amarjot.
By the time the famous Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila had separated from his singing partner and on the suggestion of Kuldeep Manak, Chamkila paired with Amarjot.
Amarjot and Chamkila were known for performing in various akharas (open-air musical concerts in Punjab).

Amarjot Kaur and Amar Singh Chamkila released many Punjabi Long Plays with the music company HMV. The duo released songs like “Ki Jor Gariban Da,” “Kan Kar Gal Sun Makhna,” “Hikk Utte So Ja Ve,” and “Gora Gora Rang.”

Amarjot and Chamkila were famous for their songs not only in Punjab (India) but also in various countries like Canada, US, Dubai, and Bahrain.

In 1985, they released three devotional LPs Baba Tera Nankana, Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di Haan, and Naam Jap Le.
The duo also released songs with vulgar lyrics for which some sections of the audience criticised them.
In the 1980s, Amarjot and Chamkila became one of the most popular jodis of Punjabi singers.
While working together, Amarjot and Chamkila fell in love with each other and then got married. Chamkila did not even divorce his first wife.

She was very fond of reading books.
On 8 March 1988 at approximately 1:40 pm, pregnant Amarjot and Chamkila both were allegedly shot by a biker gang with AK-47s, along with four members of their band just before their performance at the village Mehsampur in Jalandhar.
At the time of their death, they reportedly had 200+ songs that had not been sung or recorded officially, of which, they sang some at stage shows. Some of such songs are ‘Dhee Mar Jai Badkar Loko’, ‘Jatt Di Dushmani’, and ‘Akhiyan Di Maar Buri’.
In 2017, a biopic film ‘Amar Chamkila’ and the documentary ‘Mehsampur’ were released based on Amarjot-Chamkila’s life.

The Indian author Shamsher Singh Soni authored a book titled ‘Amarjot De Aakhri Bol’ in 2019 based on the life of Amarjot Kaur.

Conspiracy Theories About Chamkila-Amarjot’s Murder
Amarjot’s family could have been the reason behind the murder as Amarjot’s caste (Jatt) was considered higher than Chamkila’s and at that time it was considered disgraceful for an upper caste to marry a lower caste person.
During the Khalistan Movement (1980), the militants found Chamkila’s lyrics objectionable due to which they might have killed him.
They might have also been killed by his competitors who were jealous of their success.
According to another theory, they might have been killed by an artist; whom Chamkila had rejected to perform with earlier.
It is also believed that the Punjab Police could have been the reason behind the murder; because they were displeased by their vulgar songs.
