Some Lesser Known Facts About Arun Subramanian
Arun Subramanian was born to Indian immigrant parents.
He had an interest in history, literature, and philosophy and decided to study law after completing his high school education.
He registered for selective military service upon turning 18 but never served in the military.
During his time at Columbia Law School, Arun served as the Executive Articles Editor for the Columbia Law Review and published a student article on bankruptcy law and the proper interpretation of a particular form of contract used in the telecommunication industry.
He later worked in many law firms and fought many cases related to child trafficking and consumer protection.
In 2007, he joined Susman Godfrey LLP as the firm’s first litigation associate hired in the New York office and became the firm’s youngest partner at age 31 in 2011.
On September 6, 2022, 46th US President Joe Biden nominated him to the US District Court for the Southern District of New York to the seat vacated by Judge Alison Nathan, who was elevated to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
The United States Senate confirmed him as a District Judge for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) on 7 March 2023. He is the 1st South Asian-American judge confirmed to the SDNY.

He made headlines in May 2025 when he was appointed as the judge on rapper Sean Diddy Combs’ case related to racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
