Some Lesser Known Facts About Arti Sarin
After completing her schooling, Arti Sarin appeared for the All India Pre-Medical Test/ Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT) exams and qualified to join the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune.
In an interview, she decided to become a doctor in the armed forces after she watched young AFMC graduates in an Indian Navy uniform.
After completing her medical training, she went to Lucknow, where she underwent the Medical Officersā Basic Course (MOBC).
Before the 1999 Kargil War, she was posted to Jammu and Kashmir as an army doctor to look after the health of the local people living in remote areas. She served with an infantry unit as its Regimental Medical Officer (RMO).
Thereafter, she was sent to Drugmulla, where she looked after at least 150 patients per day. Thereafter, she was sent to the Line of Control (LOC), where she worked for three months. She became the first woman to be deployed along the LOC.
Her deployment to Kashmir happened after the Indian Armyās Northern Army Commander requested the then Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) to post a woman doctor in Kashmir.
The Director General of Military Services (DGMS) Army, Lt Gen Sadhana Saxena, is her batchmate from the AFMC. They both were born in the same hospital in the same year.

She has also served as a researcher at well-known organisations such as the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NTSL) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Arti has held important positions at the Naval Hospitals INHS Dhanvantari in Port Blair, INHS Kalyani in Visakhapatnam, INHS Sanjivani in Kochi, and INHS Asvini in Mumbai.

She is academically involved and has served as an examiner/post-graduate guest lecturer at the National Standard Examination (NSE), Mumbai University, Pune University, and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) for MD Radiology & DNB Radiation Oncology.
She became a rear admiral of the Indian Navy on 22 June 2020.

In the same year, she became the second woman to hold the post of Command Medical Officer (CMO) in the Southern Naval Command (SNC).

While she became the CMO of the Southern Command, her husband C. S. Naidu became the CMO of the Eastern Naval Command, thus making history for becoming the first couple to take over the same post in two different commands.
In 2020, she became the senior-most officer of the Indian Navy to undertake a sail expedition from Kochi to Lakshadweep, covering approximately 450 km.

In 2021, history was made when she took over the command of INHS Asvini from Surgeon Rear Admiral Sheila S. Mathai.
She became the sixth Indian woman to take on a three-star appointment after becoming Surgeon Vice-Admiral on 5 October 2022.

In 2024, she was appointed by the Supreme Court of India as a member of the National Task Force to help formulate policies to ensure the safety of doctors after the sexual assault and murder of Moumita Debnath at the R. G. Kar Medical College And Hospital.
As a military doctor, she has had the rare distinction of serving in the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian Navy. She served in the Army from the rank of lieutenant to captain (1985-1988), in the Navy from surgeon lieutenant to surgeon vice admiral (1989-2022), and in the Air Force at the rank of air marshal (2023).

Arti Sarin was later chosen to head the Nari Shakti Initiative of the Government of India to empower the participation of women in the Indian Armed Forces.
In an interview, she revealed that she once followed a non-vegetarian diet and liked eating dishes like galawati kebabs and pepper chicken.
