Yashwant Sonawane was a 1994 Batch IAS officer of Maharashtra Cadre.
He had worked for 15 years as an officer, before being promoted to the IAS-level rank of Additional Collector in Malegaon.
In 2011, while travelling, he found few trucks parked in a very suspicious manner near a roadside eatery where the depots of IOCL, HPC and BPCL were located. He went out of his car to investigate the matter and was burnt alive by an oil adulteration mafia in Manmad near Nasik.
Popat Shinde, the main accused, was also died in January 2011 because of a severe burnt condition.
An ex-gratia of Rs. 2.5 million was announced for his family.
