Some Lesser Known Facts About Yashasvi Jaiswal

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal is an Indian cricket player from Uttar Pradesh. He came into the spotlight when he became the youngest player in the world to score a List A double century.

  • He belongs to a financially weak family. His father used to run a small hardware store and wasn’t able to make ends meet.

  • At the age of 11, Yashasvi decided to move to Mumbai to pursue his dream of playing for the Indian Cricket Team.

  • His father did not stop him for leaving, as he was not able to feed his family of four, and their house did not have any space for another adult.

  • Yashasvi only had an uncle staying in Mumbai, whom he hardly knew. His uncle stayed in Worli, but he wasn’t able to accommodate him as his house was too small. Hence, he got him a job at a dairy where he was allowed to work and sleep.

  • Yashasvi used to attend school, and then practice cricket alone. Due to his tight schedule, he did not have any energy left at the end of the day, and he used to sleep when he was supposed to work. As a result, he was thrown out of the dairy as he only used to sleep.

  • Thereafter, his uncle helped him secure a place in the Muslim United Cricket Club in Azad Maidan, Mumbai.

  • It was after his admission to the club that he started to play regular cricket. He used to stay in the gardeners’ tent in the ground and sell fruits and pani-puri in the evening to make ends meet. However, in August 2023, in an interview, Jaiswal’s childhood coach Jwala Singh expressed his disappointment over Jaiswal’s story as a pani-puri seller. According to Jwala Singh, in the viral video of Yashasvi Jaiswal  selling pani-puri, the person standing next to him was reported in the media to be Jaiswal’s father, which is not true. Jwala Singh said,

So as per the visuals, media claims that the man next to him is his father, but Jaiswal’s father has come to Mumbai only for work purpose just a few times from 2013 to 2022. And during this period, Jaiswal has stayed with me and my family. We have never treated him like a student but instead as our own child and given all the facilities. So, watching these fake stories on him selling pani-puri does disappoint me because only a part of it is true. When these types of stories go viral, as a coach and a father-figure, it does hurt.”

  • He would often go out to lunch with his friends at the cricket club and would ask them to bear the expenses for him.

  • Once, while he was practising in the nets, the local coach, Jwala Singh, spotted him. Jwala Singh stated-

I was just standing behind the nets and it was a tricky wicket to bat on as every other player was struggling but when Yashasvi came in, he started hitting the ball cleanly. I was impressed and immediately talked to him.”

  • Singh talked to him and got to know that he used to stay in a tent with the gardener and groundsmen. He offered him a place to stay and also told him that he will take him under his wing.

  • Yashasvi soon moved to Singh’s place, who took care of him, provided him with everything, and trained him every day. He also encouraged Yashasvi to take part in competitions.

    Yashasvi Jaiswal during a match

  • He kept on playing and within a short period, he had scored 52 centuries and took more than 200 wickets.

  • Yashasvi’s parents made Jwala Singh his legal guardian and also gave him the power of attorney, and the man responsible for all his decisions.
