Controversies Vishal Bhardwaj's film, Haider (2014), won 5 national awards, which he dedicated to all the Kashmiri Pundits. However, this did not go down well with Anupam Kher, who is himself a Kashmiri Pundit. In a series of tweets, Kher accused Bhardwaj of making a biased film. Kher further added that Bhardwaj has depicted the Indian Army as the villain in the movie and no viewpoint of the Kashmiri Pandits has been shown.

  • As a child, Vishal Bhardwaj aspired to become a cricketer. He even represented his state, UP, at the U-19 level.

  • In an interview, Vishal said that in order to bag a selection for the National Cricket Team, he shifted to Delhi, as he knew that most of the players who got into the national squad were from Delhi. However, one day before a major inter-university cricket competition, Vishal broke his thumb while practicing. As a result, he couldn’t play the sport for an entire year. To add to his misery, his father also passed away the same year and Vishal never pursued his dream again.

  • Vishal had a hobby of writing/composing songs; he composed his first song at the age of 17. When Music Director Usha Khanna listened to his composition, she decided to use it for the film Yaar Kasam (1985).

  • His elder brother, who wanted to become a film producer, struggled for years in Mumbai. Finding no success, his brother went into depression and eventually died of a heart attack.

  • While exploring the field of music, Vishal wasted no opportunity that came along his way. And thus in order to manage his expenses, he took up a job with a music company named CBS in Delhi.

  • Vishal and his wife Rekha first met at their college annual function. Rekha was one year senior to him at Hindu college and even that could not stop them from falling in love.

  • He considers Shakespeare as his greatest inspiration. His films Maqbool (2003), Omkara (2006) and Haider (2014) are all adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays- Macbeth, Othello and Hamlet respectively. This Shakespearean trilogy by Vishal was also screened as part of an event marking William Shakespear’s 400th death anniversary in London.

  • Also a fan of Ruskin Bond, Vishal has adopted a number of Ruskin Bond’s stories/books into films. While The Blue Umbrella (2005) was based on Ruskin’s novel of the same, 7 Khoon Maaf was inspired from Susanna’s Seven Husbands. Interestingly, Ruskin Bond and Vishal Bhardwaj are neighbors in Mussoorie and share the same wall.

  • Notably, The Blue Umbrella won the National Award for Best Children’s Film.

  • His music composing skills fetched him another National Award for the film- Ishqiya (2010). Additionally, for his immense contribution towards Indian cinema, he was awarded the Yash Bharti Award by the UP government in 2016.
