Some Lesser Known Facts About Vikram Bhatt
Vikram Bhatt is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor who is best known for directing the Indian horror film series âRaazâ and film âGhulamâ (1999).
Born into a family of pioneers of the Indian film industry, Bhatt was inclined towards pursuing a career in filmmaking since childhood.

He began his career at the age of fourteen as an assistant director. In 1990, he worked as the chief assistant director for the film âAgneepath.â
After his directional debut with the musical romance film âJaanamâ (1992), his following four films did not fare well at the box office. In 1996, he came into the limelight when he directed the psychological thriller film âFareb.â
Thereafter, he directed the successful films Ghulam (1998), Kasoor (2001), and Awara Paagal Deewana (2002).
On the sets of the psychological thriller film Dastak (1996), Bhattâs debut film as a writer, he made acquaintance with Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen , who was the lead actress of the film. Soon after, Bhatt began his extra-marital affair with Sen, which led to Bhattâs divorce from Aditi Bhatt in 1988. Bhatt and Senâs relationship was short-lived.
In 1997, Bhatt and Sen made an appearance in the interview-style talk show âSimi Garewalâs show.â When Simi asked about being in a relationship with Bhatt while he was still married, Sen replied,
The wife and him were not living together, and I cannot go around feeling guilty or make a person feel guilty if he had a bad marriage. I donât fell guilty because I have done something very openly with a very open conscience. I know that the man was in a divorce when I met him, and I wasnât going to wait to tell the world that I loved him just because he hadnât gone through with his divorce yet.â
In a tell-all interview in 2021, Bhatt revealed that he contemplated suicide after the break-up of his marriage with childhood sweetheart Aditi. In the heartfelt interview, he said,
That was not because of Sushmita. That was because of what Iâd done to my life. I had gotten divorced, my film Ghulam was yet to be released, I was only Sushmita Senâs boyfriend, I was depressed, I missed my daughter like crazyâŚI had just made a mess of my life.â
In 2002, he gained popularity for directing the supernatural horror film âRaazâ, starring Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea and Malini Sharma. The box office hit film earned the nomination in the category Best Film at the Filmfare Awards (2003). The film also earned Bhatt the Dream Director Award at the Stardust Awards (2003).
A sequel to the film was released in 2009 titled âRaaz: The Mystery Continues.â
His career saw a downfall with the flop films Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage (2002), Deewane Huye Paagal (2005), and Ankahee (2006).
In 2008, Bhatt made a comeback with the successful horror film â1920.â He earned immense appreciation for directing the 3D horror film âHaunted â 3Dâ (2011), which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi horror films earning over Rs. 36 crores at the box office.
In 2011, a cyst developed in his back due to which he underwent surgery.
In 2012, a sequel to Bhattâs film series âRaazâ was released titled âRaaz 3.â The Indian 3D horror thriller film accumulated over Rs. 91 crores at the box office; the film was tagged with the label âSuper Hitâ by the Box Office India.
Following his successful career as a director of horror films, Bhattâs written horror film â1920: Evil Returnsâ (2012), topped the first-week collection chart at the box office grossing over Rs. 16 crores.

He is the former creative head of ASA Productions and Enterprises, where he worked until 2014.
In an interview, while talking about his failed relationships, he said,
I am not a good husband or boyfriendâŚRelationship demands understanding, compromise and I find myself unable to do that. I find myself suffering from insomnia and sleep barely two to three hours at night. I wake up and then sleep two hours again. A woman really needs to be in love with me, to be with me.â
Acting credits under his belt include the role of Mr Wadia in the film â1921â (2018), Arjun Vashisht in the web series Zindabaad (2018), and Doctor Singh in the film âGhostâ (2019).
He narrated short stories in SonyLIVâs show âOnce Upon A Time with Vikram Bhattâ (2016).
He directed the 2016 film âLove Games,â featuring scandalous sex lives of the high society, consisting of swinger parties and partner swapping.
Along with Shwetambari Soni , Amar Thakkar, and his daughter Krishna Bhatt, Vikram became a director of Loneranger Productions Private Limited on 17 June 2016. He was also a designated partner in Dreamscape Entertainment LLP.
In 2017, Vikram Bhatt ventured into the erotic romance genre when he directed the web series âMaaya: Slave of Her Desires,â which was dubbed as the first Indian fictional work on BDSM. Written by Bhatt, the adult web series caused a stir in Indian showbiz.
He is also the writer of its sequels âMaaya 2â (2018) and âMaaya 3â (2019).
For the storyline of âRaaz 3,â Vikram drew insights from his previous relationship with Ameesha Patel. The couple made acquaintance during a low phase of their life. The storyline of âRaaz 3â centres around an actress, who is going through a low phase in her career during which she falls in love with a director undergoing similar circumstances.
