Some Lesser Known Facts About Vijaypat Singhania
He belongs to a Marwari industrialist family.
After graduating with B.Com, he worked as a professor of Post Graduate Management for a while at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai.
He is a devotee of Lord Tirupati Balaji.
After leaving the job as a professor, at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, he worked as a manager at J. K. Chemicals under J. K. Organization.
He became the managing director and chairman of Raymond Limited in 1980. He made Raymond one of the best clothing brands in India.
During his tenure, he started selling synthetic fabrics and denim clothes along with woollen textiles. He expanded the company’s business by selling steel, fly ash, and cement.
Raymond suffered financial losses during the recession period from 1996 to 1997, which affected the steel and cement company’s profit.
In 1988, he broke the world record in the speed-over-time endurance category of Guinness World Records for flying a microlight aircraft solo from London’s Biggin Hill Airport to New Delhi’s Safdarjung Airport in 23 days.
He was appointed as the chairman of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) in 1991 and served until 2002.
In 1994, Vijaypat participated in the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale around-the-world air race starting and ending in Montreal, Canada. He flew the turboprop Cessna Conquest covering 56 hours and 4 minutes and passing over 9 countries in 23 days. He won the race by finishing 32 minutes ahead of his nearest rival.

He was appointed as an Honorary Air Commodore by the Indian Air Force in 1994.
He made Gautam Singhania the chairman of Raymond Ltd in 2000. Vijaypat continued working at Raymond as Chairman-Emeritus, in a non-executive role until 2015.
Vijaypat Singhania, at 67 years old, set a new world record in 2005 by flying a hot air balloon at an altitude of 69,000 ft. After setting the record Vijaypat stated that,
This goes to show to the world that we are not bullock cart drivers, but we can compete against the best of the world.”
He described his journey from the UK to India on a microlight aircraft in 23 days in the book “An Angel in the Cockpit: The True Story of a Death-defying Flight Across 5000 Miles of Land and Sea” in 2005.
On 19 December 2005, he was appointed as the Sheriff of Mumbai.
Vijaypat Singhania built the school named Dr.Vijaypat Singhania School in Pardi, Valsad District, Gujrat in 2013.
He published an autobiography titled “An Incomplete Life: The Autobiography” in 2021.
He considers J. R. D. Tata and Howard Huges as his inspiration to fly an aircraft.
