| Controversies | Booked under POCSO Varun has been charged under POCSO for allegedly raping a minor for 5 years by the Bengaluru police. The complainant has alleged that she was forced by Varun for a physical relationship in 2019, when she was a minor, under false pretence of marriage. She has further claimed that Varun started to avoid her after she insisted on getting married. While accepting to be in a relationship with the complainant, Varun denied the allegations in an interview and claimed that the case was an attempt to extort money from him. He started playing hockey in class 4 on the advice of his friend and classmate, Manpreet Singh .
He belongs to the Gaddi community of Himachal Pradesh. He shifted to Punjab to play hockey.
Varun Kumar has honed his skills at the Surjit Singh Hockey Academy in Punjab.
He is a drag-flick specialist.

While growing up, he didn’t have enough money to buy new equipment for hockey.
He has an elder brother who wanted to represent India but couldn’t play further than the state level due to a lack of funds.
He began his career in 2012 at the Junior National Championship, representing Punjab.
In 2013, he missed out on the opportunity of participating in the Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup due to injury.
In 2014, he joined the India’s junior national team.
In the same year, he also became a part of Punjab Warriors, playing in the Hockey India League.

In 2015, his exceptional performance in the Junior Asia Cup cemented his position as a defender in the national team of India.
His team, Punjab Warriors, won the Hockey India League in 2016 and retained him for the next 3 seasons because of his performance.
He was a part of the Indian team that won the 2016 Men’s Hockey Junior World Cup.
His performance in the Junior World Cup impressed the selectors and he was called for India’s senior hockey team.
Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur, announced a Rs 1 crore award to Varun Kumar for being a member of the Indian team at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2021, the Punjab Government renamed Government Primary School Mithapur, Jalandhar, Punjab, after him as Olympian Mandeep Singh Varun Kumar Government Primary School, Mithapur, Jalandhar for his contribution in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
He was awarded the position of DSP by Punjab police on 4 February 2024 for being a part of the Indian Olympic Team. The Chief Minister of Punjab, Bhagwant Mann, handed the appointment letter to Varun.
