Vangaveeti Ranga was born in Katuru near Vuyyuru in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh.
He was the youngest of his 4 brothers.
Ranga entered politics after his elder brother Vangaveeti Radhakrishna was killed.
In 1981, his political career started when Congress withdrew its official candidate in Ranga’s favor in the Vijayawada.
Chalasani Venkata Ratnam of CPI Party supported his family when they came to Vijayawada.
Differences between Chalasani and Vangaveeti family rose when Ranga’s elder brother Vangaveeti Radhakrishna started an auto stand in the Lenin Centre in Vijayawada.
Vangaveeti Ranga’s biggest rival was Devineni Rajasekhar; however, earlier he was a close associate of Ranga’s elder brother Vangaveeti Radhakrishna.
Devineni Rajasekhar Nehru was supported by the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) which was dominated by the Kamma caste, while Ranga was a leader of the Kapu community.
In a rally called Kapunadu on 10 July 1988, Ranga was proclaimed as the leader of the Kapus.
In 1988, he started a bus tour- Jana Chaitanya Yatra to highlight the autocratic rule of N. T. Rama Rao (the then Chief Minister of Andhra Minister).
In the early hours of 25 December 1988, he was attacked by a group of men when he was on a hunger strike demanding a greater personal protection. He was murdered in that brutal attack.
A series of riots took place in the region after his death and curfew was imposed for 40 days in the city of Vijayawada.
In the year 1989, Ranga’s widow Ratna Kumari was elected MLA from the East Vijayawada Constituency, however, in her 2nd term; she switched to the TDP from the Congress.
Ranga’s son, Radha Krishna, also entered politics and was an MLA (2004 to 2009) from the Congress Party and later shifted to Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) and then to the YSR Congress Party in the year 2012.
