Some Lesser Known Facts About Uma Ramanan
Uma Ramanan predominantly sang in the Tamil language.
While studying in college, she participated in several singing competitions and won several prizes.
As a musician, Uma Ramanan worked with several well-known music composers such as Vidyasagar, Srikanth Deva, and Mani Sharma.
Some of her most famous works have come with collaboration with famous musician, Ilaiyaraaja . They recorded over 100 songs together.
The song Poongathave Thaal Thiravai for the film āNizhalgalā (1980), composed by Ilaiyaraaja, brought Uma into the limelight and made her famous.
Uma Ramanan was fluent in several languages and could sing in Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, English, and Punjabi languages.

She had a 35-year-long career during which she performed in more than 6000 concerts.
She met her husband, A.V. Ramanan, just after completing her college education.

Together, they formed Musiano, a band of educated musicians along with a fellow musician, Sri Jawahar, in July 1973.
She sang with her husband in her first Hindi song Hai Ek Buddhu Chhora in 1976.
She entered the Tamil film industry at a time when new singers didnāt get proper appreciation.
In an interview, she claimed about not feeling satisfied at the emotional level even after giving several hit performances in movies and on stage, and said,
Despite having a good number of hits to my credit (more than 500 in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi and 6,000 concerts), I still feel a Tamil singer like me has not been given a proper place in the industry. Fulfilment at the emotional level still eludes me.ā
Uma Ramanan had trained in music for 8 years under Palani Vijaya Lakshmi.
She was also a trained classicalĀ dancer, completing her training under Padma Subrahmanyam .

During one of the groupās performances at Hotel Palmgrove when their keyboardist failed to arrive on time, Umaās son, Vignesh Ramanan, who was only 11 years old at the time, told her that he would perform as a keyboardist that day.
This surprised Uma and A.V. Ramanan as neither of them knew that their son could play the keyboard. Uma talked about how Vignesh helped the group that day in an interview and said,
Till that moment we did not even know that he knew any music, leave alone play the keyboard for an entire evening. He handled the instrument with the ease of a veteran and saved us.ā
