He grew up in a rough neighbourhood, where he started using roasting as a way to protect himself.
In an interview with a media house, Tony Hinchcliffe once shared that his jokes got him a punch on his face on the first day of school while riding a bus.
On the HoneyDew podcast with Ryan Sickler, he once shared that when he was a child, his father was married to someone else, and his birth was kept secret from his father.
Tony Hinchcliffe did not know about his fatherâs other family until he was a teenager and had always assumed that his dad just travelled a lot for work.

Tony Hinchcliffe then began doing stand-up comedy at open mic nights at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, California. He got a job of answering the phone calls and working at the entrance booth there, becoming a regular paid performer.

In 2013, he began producing and hosting a podcast called Kill Tony, a live weekly show recorded at The Comedy Store. In the show, Hinchcliffe and his co-host Brian Redban along with a changing panel of comedians and celebrities, judge budding comedians.
In the show The Comedy Store, contestants put their names in a bucket and are picked randomly throughout the show to perform a one-minute comedy set, after which they receive feedback from the judges.
Kill Tony gave new comedians a platform to display their skills and grow their careers. The contestants could perform on any topic, allowing for tense or controversial content.

His roasting style and humour caught the attention of Jeff Ross, known as the âRoastmaster Generalâ of Comedy Central Roast, who became his mentor and helped Hinchcliffe get his first writing job.
Tony Hinchcliffe went on to write for Comedy Central Roast episodes featuring celebrities like James Franco , Justin Bieber , and Rob Lowe.
His work included writing Martha Stewartâs jokes for the Justin Bieber roast and Ann Coulterâs jokes for the Rob Lowe roast. He also wrote for The Burn with Jeff Ross and competed in the first season of Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle in 2016.
In the same year, Tony Hinchcliffe appeared as a roaster on a show named All Def Digital Roast of Snoop Dogg.
He released his first one-hour stand-up special, One Shot, on Netflix in 2016. The show was considered unique because it was filmed in one continuous camera take without any edits.

In 2017, during the Monster Energy Outbreak Tour, Tony Hinchcliffe performed in 20 cities across the U.S. in 22 days.
In September 2020, he announced that he would move to Austin, Texas, joining Joe Rogan and Brian Redban. His Kill Tony podcast also moved, first to Antoneâs Nightclub in Austin, and then in May 2021 to the Vulcan Gas Company on 6th Street.
In 2023, Tony Hinchcliffe hosted Joe Roganâs Austin-based comedy club, Comedy Mothership. The show held its first theatre event on New Yearâs Eve in 2023 at the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park.

In May 2021, during a stand-up show at the Vulcan Gas Company in Austin, Tony Hinchcliffe was filmed making offensive remarks about Peng Dang, an Asian American comedian who had introduced him.
He insulted Dang with a racial taunt, used Asian stereotypes in a mock accent, and criticized audience members who laughed at Dangâs jokes, calling them race betrayers. The video was later posted on Twitter, went viral, and received widespread criticism.
Following the incident, Hinchcliffeâs agency, WME, dropped him, and he was removed from upcoming shows with Joe Rogan in Austin. Antone, the Austin nightclub, also announced that it would no longer host Hinchcliffe or his Kill Tony live show.
According to a media house, he joked that Chinese people came to Austin because of the bats and told offended audience members that they were wrong to take him seriously. Later, Dang said he did not receive an apology from Hinchcliffe.

After that, during a media interview, Tony Hinchcliffe defended his remarks, saying they were meant as a joke, and that he did nothing wrong. He argued that comedians should never apologize for jokes and instead focus on their work, which was what he chose to do after the incident.
In an October 2023 episode of the Triggernometry podcast, Hinchcliffe claimed that Peng Dang was a âChinese spyâ and that the backlash was part of a plotted attack by the Chinese media.
In response, Dang questioned the idea of a spy posing as a stand-up comedian and shared that he continued to receive racist and hateful messages from some of Hinchcliffeâs fans following the incident.
In 2024, he appeared as a roaster on the show The Roast of Tom Brady.
On 27 October 2024, Tony Hinchcliffe spoke at a Donald Trump campaign rally at Madison Square Garden, where he made several offensive remarks.
He insulted Puerto Rico, calling it a âfloating island of garbage,â and made negative comments about migrants, using stereotypes about Latino families.
Tony Hinchcliffe also made insensitive jokes about Black people, Palestinians, and Jews, using racist and antisemitic language.
His remarks attracted a lot of criticism including from Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, who called him a âjackwad.â
Other representatives such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ritchie Torres, both of Puerto Rican descent, responded by saying he was âtempted to call Hinchcliffe racist garbage but doing so would be an insult to garbage.â

In response to Hinchcliffeâs comments on Puerto Rico, Trump campaign senior advisor Danielle Alvarez stated that his remarks did not represent Trump or the campaignâs views. However, Donald Trump Jr. retweeted Hinchcliffeâs dismissal of the criticism, where Hinchcliffe denied being racist and accused Tim Walz and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of lacking a sense of humour.
Tony Hinchcliffe criticized Walz for â[taking] time out of his âbusy scheduleâ to analyze a joke out of context to make it seem racist.â The Trump campaign officially distanced itself from Hinchcliffeâs comments about Puerto Rico.
In 2020, he launched an online course called RoastMaster Class.
