Tom Homan was interested in law enforcement as his father worked in the army and later in police service.
In 1984, after completing his studies, he joined the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

He later became the first director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) director who had come through the ranks.
In 2014, he came up with a theory that illegal border crossings could be lowered if they separated children from their parents.

He had retired but when President Donald Trump asked him to become the head of ICE, he accepted the role.

He once revealed an incident in 2019 that solidified his resolve to stop the illegal border crossings. In 2003, he once found a trailer in Victoria, Texas where 19 people had died including a 5-year-old boy who died due to suffocation.
He also talked about an incident when a person crossed the border illegally but was attacked by coyotes. That person had one leg in his hand when Homan found him.
In August 2018, he joined the Fox News channel as a political commentator.

In 2019, his video went viral in which he was seen having a heated argument with the AOC Alexandria Ocasio Cortez.
Many people protested outside his house against his actions. Some of them even called him racist but he said he wasn’t affected by that as he knew in his heart that he was securing his country.
On 25 February 2022, he was spotted at an event of Nick Fuentes’ America First Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida. But when he saw that Fuentes had praised Putin, he left the event even before it started.
In February 2022, he joined the conservative think tank Heritage Project and became a contributor to its political initiative Project 2025, which proposes mass arrests, detentions, and deportations of illegal immigrants (often called Alien by Tom Homan).
In November 2022, he released a book titled Defend the Border and Save Lives in partnership with The United West, which is a designated anti-muslim hate group.

In 2023, he started a website border911.com to spread awareness about the issue of illegal border crossing.
He spoke at the National Conservatism Conference meeting in 2024, where he warned all the illegal immigrants and said, “Trump comes back in January, I’ll be on his heels coming back, and I will run the biggest deportation force this country has ever seen. They ain’t seen shit yet. Wait until 2025.“
On July 17 at the 2024 Republican National Convention, he reiterated his plans and told the illegal immigrants to start packing their bags.

He made headlines later when he said that Mexican cartels, particularly Tren de Aragua and MS-13, were responsible for millions of illegal border crossings and that he would wipe them off the face of the earth. He also blamed them for smuggling drugs such as fentanyl to America.
After Donald Trump became the 47th US President in November 2024, he chose Tom Homan as the new ICE director. It was the second time Homan came out of retirement.
Reportedly, he would use the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 and work in the deportation of many illegal families. It also includes workplace raids.
He has worked under 6 US Presidents.
While talking about his appointment as the Director of ICE, he claimed that thousands of border patrol agents called him and sent his messages, desiring to join the ICE back to serve their country.
