While she was enrolling at New York University, she got a letter of recommendation from the Indian filmmaker Mira Nair .
After graduating from NYU, she worked at domestic violence shelters and prisons with the Creative Arts Team.
According to Tillotama, she was not good at studies while studying in school.
While studying at Lady Shri Ram College in Delhi, she watched a play by Piyush Mishra and became curious about acting. She later auditioned for a college play in which she got very few lines as she had stammering issue.
To brush up her acting skills, she joined Asmita Theatre Group, New Delhi
