| Controversy | On 20 November 2013, he stepped down as editor-in-chief of 'Tehelka Magazine' for 6 months, after his female colleague alleged that she had been sexually assaulted by him at Hotel Hyatt Goa. The incident took place in Goa, and the Goa Police immediately filed an F.I.R. against Tejpal which lists charges, including rape, against him. A non-bailable warrant was issued against him after which he was arrested by the Goa Police on 30 November 2013. But, after 9 months, on 1 July 2014, Supreme Court granted him bail.  |

Tejpal was born into a modest Punjabi family with an army background.
During his childhood, he was very keen to gain knowledge about world history and affairs. He was more interested in sports than studies.
He used to make friends that were older than him.
He met his wife during his college days in Chandigarh.
He never went to his college to get his degree.
He started his career in the early 1980s, by joining âThe Indian Express.â
After getting relocated to New Delhi, he joined a magazine called âIndia 2000.â
In 1983, in just the second assignment of his life, he clinched an interview with the leader of Khalistan movement and firebrand Sikh preacher, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, which earned him some praise.
In 1984, he joined âIndia Todayâ magazine, and due to his popularity over there he gained the name âthe Che Guevara of Indian journalism.â
In 1994, he left âIndia Todayâ and joined âThe Financial Express.â The same year, he joined their rival publication, âOutlookâ, where he worked for many years as managing editor, but got sacked for non-performance.
In 1998, he founded a publishing company called âIndia Ink.â
By 2000, he started working on investigative stories with his long time colleague, Aniruddha Bahal. After exposing betting in cricket, they decided to start an online site to continue their work.
In March 2000, after the emergence of the internet, he founded âtehelka.comâ, an online independent news and views magazine known for doing âsting operations.â
He was offered a ticket before the 2004 elections, but he refused because of his disinterest in the politics.
For his gutsy sting operations, a group of contract killers was hired to kill him. Based on his experiences, he wrote his second novel, âThe Story of My Assassinsâ (2009).
In 2007, his website was relaunched as âTehelkaâ a weekly magazine.Â
In 2009, popular magazine âBusiness Weeklyâ listed him amongst, âIndiaâs 50 Most Powerful People 2009.â
