Tammi Menendez began writing letters to Erik while she was married to Chuck Saccoman, who allowed her to communicate with Erik.
Erik Menendez said that when he received Tammi’s letter, he felt a connection and set it aside to reply to her. Their friendship grew slowly.
After Tammi’s husband died in 1996, she turned to Erik for comfort, and their relationship became romantic. They met in person at Folsom State Prison in 1997, which Erik called one of the best moments of his life.

The couple got married in 1999 at Sacramento State Prison, and Erik became a stepfather to Tammi’s daughter, Talia. Erik called Tammi his “lifesaver,” as her love helped him choose to keep going.
