Supriya was seven years old when she acted in two plays directed by her father.
During World War II, her family moved from Burma to Calcutta (now in India). After reaching India, she continued with her dance classes.
At a young age, she became a very prominent dancer in Burma. Even the Prime Minister of Burma got impressed by her dance moves.
Her closest friend, Nihar Dutta, got married in Guha Thakurata family and became Mrs Nihar Guha Thakurata, an eminent social worker of Burma.
In 2014, she was honoured with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India.
She was also awarded Filmfare East Lifetime Achievement Award and West Bengal government’s highest civilian award, Banga Vibhushan.
She was in a relationship with legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, they lived together for many years. However, they could not get married.
She was last seen in the English movie ‘The Namesake’. She often appeared on Bangla television shows.
