| Controversies | ⢠In 1993, the controversial song "Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai" of his directorial movie "Khalnayak," was criticized over the central theme of the lyrics of the song which was being considered as vulgar and socially absurd. ⢠After the shooting of Saudagar starring Manisha Koirala (her launching pad in Bollywood), Dilip Kumar , and Raj Kumar, Manisha's mother Sushma Koirala revealed in an interview that Subhash Ghai made derogatory advances towards her daughter. She also told that he would daily have a one-hour discussion with Manisha in her vanity van in her absence. Although Manisha did not make any comment on these allegations, the star did not work with Subhai Ghai after that. Subhash refuted these allegations stating that Sushma Koirala wanted her daughter to become popular in a very short period and that's the only motive behind those allegations. ⢠In 2010, Israel based model Rina Golan who released her book "Dear Mister Bollywood: How I Fell in Love with India, Bollywood and Shah Rukh Khan" revealing the bitter truth about casting couch in Bollywood. Subhash Ghai's name was among the few names she had mentioned in the book whom she met during her struggle in Bollywood. She claimed that starting her discussion with Subhash Ghai in the living room was gradually shifting to his bedroom. Subhash Ghai denied the rumours claiming that he could not even recall if he ever met Rina Golan or ever read her book. ⢠In an interview, Salman Khan on being asked that if he ever hit his ex-girlfriends "Katrina Kaif & Aishwarya Rai ", he revealed that he never hit the two actresses, and the only time he raised his hand was on director Subhash Ghai. Though he apologized to Subhash the very next day. Salman revealed that he smashed Ghai only after Ghai's provocation âThere are times when you do get out of control. That person hit me with a spoon, almost broke a plate on my face, pissed on my shoes and grabbed me by the neck. I could not control myself. And see what happened. Next day, I had to go and apologize.â ⢠In 2018, during the MeToo campaign, an anonymous woman alleged that he had drugged and raped him. He was born in Nagpur and did his schooling from Delhi and completed his graduation from Rohtak, Haryana. He went to Pune and joined Film and Television Institute of India.
His career started in Bollywood as an actor, playing minuscule roles in movies such as âTaqdeerâ (1967) and âAradhanaâ (1971).
In Umang and Gumraah, he played the male lead role.
In 1982, he launched âMukta Artsâ, his film production company and has produced many movies under its banner since then.Â
He made his directorial debut with âKalicharan_â_ starring Shatrughan Sinha .
In the 1980s and 1990s, his collaboration with Dilip Kumar  whom he directed in âVidhaataâ (1982), âKarmaâ (1986), and âSaudagarâ (1991), was a success. Later, Ghai won the Filmfare Best Director Award for Saudagar.
He also introduced Jackie Shroff ; making him the lead actor in âHeroâ (1983) and assisted actors like Anil Kapoor in uplifting their career.
Later on, he cast Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor together in Karma (1986), Ram Lakhan (1989), and Trimurti (1995).
In 1990, he directed a short film based on communal harmony with star kids Tiger Shroff , Sonam Kapoor , Ranbir Kapoor titled âPyar Ki Ganga Baheâ, its lyrics were given by Javed Akhtar  and was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
In 1991, with 42 Bollywood stars, 250 dancers, and 200 musicians, he organized and directed a Magnum Audi Visual stage show âCINEMA CINEMAâ to celebrate 100 years of world cinema at NSCI Mumbai.
In 1993, two of the songs âCholi Ke Peeche Kya Haiâ and âNayak Nahin Khalnayak Hu Mainâ of his movie âKhalnayakâ starring Madhuri Dixit , Sanjay Dutt , and Jackie Shroff became very popular because of the controversial lyrics they had.
He gave newcomers Apurva Agnihotri and Mahima Chaudhry a chance to launch themselves and to work with Shah Rukh Khan in âPardes.â In 1999, his directorial âTaalâ starring Akshaye Khanna , Anil Kapoor , and Aishwarya Rai was released. Both of his movies were released internationally and received a huge commercial and critical acclaim.
In the 90s, the media gave him the title âShowman.â
He was the first in the film industry to introduce insurance policy with his movie âTaalâ and also took the initiative of banks to finance movies.
He took a break from the industry when his movies (Yaadein in 2001 and Kisna in 2005) failed at the box office.
He made a come back by turning into a producer and produced movies including Aitraaz (2004), Iqbal (2005), 36 China Town (2006), and Apna Sapna Money Money (2006).
He established his own film institute âWhistling Woods Internationalâ in Mumbai in 2006. It gives training in the areas: direction, animation, cinematography, production, and acting.
After a break of three years, he returned back to direction with âBlack and Whiteâ and âYuvvraajâ in 2008.
