Subedar Major Ojit Singh hails from the 3 Assam Regiment.
In late May 2025, Ojit was shortlisted among the top command JCOs. Later, all the shortlisted candidates underwent a tough interview and evaluation by the Infantry Directorate (Inf‑6) and senior JCOs.
On 5 June 2025, he was officially appointed as the first-ever Command Subedar Major (Comd SM) of Northern Command in Udhampur. He was appointed by Lt. Gen. Pratik Sharma, GOC-in-C Northern Command.
His appointment came a few days after the COAS directed the establishment of Comd SM positions across all seven Army commands, including the HQ of the Chief of Army Staff, mirroring Western-style Senior Sergeant-Major roles.
He will serve as an advisor to the Army commander on matters concerning Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks (ORs).
Subedar Major Ojit Singh will also provide direct counsel to the Northern Commander on key issues such as boosting morale, setting training standards, and ensuring personnel welfare at the grassroots level.
In addition to advisory responsibilities, Subedar Major Singh will have a role in operational reviews. He will accompany the Army commander during visits to units and formations and will conduct dedicated interactions with commands’ JCOs and ORs to assess on-ground realities and communicate them back to the command leadership.
Ojit Singh’s role is purely advisory and does not include administrative responsibilities to the Army commander.
His service tenure as Command Subedar Major (Comd SM) is set at two years, which can be extended to three years.
Subedar Major Ojit Singh’s appointment is considered to be a major step toward building trust between soldiers and senior leadership, especially in the sensitive Northern Command region.
