Steph McGovern’s childhood was in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England.
In 1997, at age 15, she won the Irish World Dancing Championships (Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne) at Galway, Ireland.

In 1998, at the start of her sixth form (the final two years of secondary education in some Commonwealth countries), she won the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship from The Smallpiece Trust for potential leadership qualities in the engineering field.
After her sixth form, she took a gap year (a sabbatical year taken by students). She worked as a junior member of the Six Sigma team specialising in lean production with Black+Decker, a power tool manufacturer in Durham.
While working at Black+Decker, she won two major awards – Young Engineer for Britain and the Year in Industry (YinI) for outstanding contribution to the industry business. She was instrumental in saving the company approximately £150,000 by contributing to an innovative production technique in the manufacturing process of Leaf Hog.
She joined the Imperial College London to pursue mechanical engineering but dropped it and joined the University College London after learning about their science programme.
While studying at UCL, she worked on BBC’s Tomorrow’s World ( a science-based educational programme) as a researcher in current affairs.
She started her media career as a producer for radio and television shows including the news section in BBC’s news bulletins at one, six and ten o’clock.
The radio programmes Steph McGovern presented include Wake Up to Money and On the Money on BBC Radio 5 Live.
The television programmes she presented include Pocket Money Pitch (2016) for CBBC, Shop Well for Less (2016-2018) on BBC One with Alex Jones, and Watchdog (2016-2019) on BBC One.
In 2019, she took a break following her pregnancy and the birth of her daughter.

In 2025, she appeared on the reality competition series, Celebrity Bear Hunt, starring Bear Grylls and available on Netflix. She was the runner-up in the competition set in the jungle of Costa Rica.

In February 2025, she appeared as a contestant in the television quiz show, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Celebrity Specials aired on ITV1 and ITVX. She won £125,000 for the charity of her choice, Rubies, which supports girl children in their education and skill development.

She is fitness and health-conscious and follows an exercise, diet and intermittent fasting. According to her, the diet helps her to manage her Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
