Some Lesser Known Facts About Spencer Johnson
Spencer Johnson is an Australian cricketer who is known for being a T20I death-over specialist. He gained attention for bowling many economical spells in various Big Bash League (BBL) matches. He made headlines after the Gujarat Titans (GT) acquired him for the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season for Rs 10 crores.
He was born into a family of sportspersons as his father, Greg, initially played rugby (Australian football) for South Broken Hill and later for West Adelaide in the South Australian National Football League. His brothers also played for West Adelaide later.

During his childhood, he and his brothers played different sports in their backyard. He later played cricket and rugby during his school years.

He played rugby for the Under-16 team of Flinders Park Football Club and scored more than 100 goals while playing for the Under-18 team of Flinders Park Football Club in the 2014 season. He later quit rugby and pursued a cricket career.

In 2013, he was selected for South Australia Under-19. He later played in the 2014-15 West End Premier Cricket Competition for West Torrens Cricket Club (also known as West Eagles).

South Australia (also known as West End Redbacks) gave him a contract before the 2017-18 season. He made his List-A debut for Rednecks in the 2017–18 JLT One-Day Cup. He later had to take a break from cricket as he suffered a stress fracture injury in the talus bone at the top of the ankle joint, an injury more common in track and field athletes than cricketers.

In the 2022-23 Sheffield Shield Tournament, he debuted in first-class cricket against Victoria. He trained under retired Australia pacer, Jason Gillespie. He later signed a contract deal with Rednecks till 2026.

On 11 January 2023, he made his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for the Brisbane Heat against Perth Scorchers during the 2022-23 season. He was a member of the Adelaide Strikers for two seasons from 2020-22; however, he never got a chance to represent them in any BBL match.

On 10 August 2023, he made his debut for Oval Invincibles against Manchester Originals in the 100-ball tournament The Hundred. He took 3 wickets by giving 1 run in 20 deliveries.

 During the 2023 auction for the 2024 IPL season, his base price was Rs 50 lakhs (AU $90,000), and he was picked by Gujarat Titans (GT) for Rs 10 crores (AU $1.78 Million).
His bowling speeds have mostly been recorded over 145 kmph (90 mph). His fastest ball speed is around 150 kmph (93mph).
After passing out of high school in 2013, Spencer Johnson worked as a pastry chef for 12 months to earn money. He later opened a home turf business with his brother, and 18 months before he was picked by Gujarat Titans for the 2024 IPL season, he was working as a landscape gardener to make ends meet.
He suffered a stress fracture in his ankle in 2017 due to which he could not run and had to rest for several months. Two surgeries were done to heal the injury; however, when they were unsuccessful, his doctors decided to put screws in his ankle joint. When Johnson’s doctor, who was the best foot surgeon available in Sydney, said that he had never done such type of surgery, Johnson became fearful of the chances of surgery being successful. His body rejected the screws, and the whole process of treatment was done again.
