Some Lesser Known Facts About Sowmya Jaganmurthy
Sowmya reminisced in an interview that her journey as a dancer started when she was not chosen for a dance program for a school function. So, while studying in the eighth grade, she did her first choreography for an old Kannada song, Gal Gal Galak, from the film Rathna Manjari (1962), which the audience highly appreciated.
Sowmya is trained in various dance forms such as Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, martial arts such as Kalarippayattu, yoga, painting, and acting.
She was trained under eminent gurus Jayachandran Palazhy (artistic director of ACMA) in contemporary techniques, Guru Dil Sagar in Kalaripayattu, Minal Prabhu in Bharatanatyam, Christine Jaroszewski in Ballet, Chris Lechner in Contact Improvisation and Arunji of Prashant Yogashraya in Yoga.

She started her career as a performer and senior facilitator at the Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts (ACMA).
Some of her major performances showcased on various stages inside and outside India are a modern dance named Transavatar and a contemporary dance production named Purushartha.
She worked with various theatre groups such as the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), Yours Truly Theatre, and We Move Theatre.
She attended the pilot batch of the Dance Intense workshop organised by Sampad International as a dancer in Birmingham.
She worked as a facilitator for workshops conducted by the Sadhana Spastic Society, Mumbai and Ritanjali Second Chance School, Delhi.
She also worked as a teacher in several schools including Parikrma Centre for Learning, Golden Bead Montessori, and Outreach School in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
As of March 2024, she continues her Bharatanatyam dance training under her guru, Ms Rama Vaidyanathan.

She collaborates with various dance groups such as Nritarutya Dance Studio, Raadha Kalpa Dance Company, Samanvay Dance Company, and Bangalore Dance Collective and artists like Michel Casanovas, Veena Basavarajaiah, Liadain Speranza Herriott, and Abhilash Ningappa for various dance projects, corporate events, and festivals.

She has performed in events such as the International Photography Festival in China (2007) and Nagarantharan of ACMA at the Trafalgar Square Festival in London (2007).
She is a food lover. She often posts her recipes and food pictures on her social media accounts.

Sowmya and her dancer friends started a dance company called Swadhyay which choreographs various dance productions and trains young talents. She provides yoga classes and training for HIV- afflicted and underprivileged children at this facility.
She is also one of the directors of the production house, Pawan Kumar Films Private Limited.
Sowmya and her husband Pawan Kumar own farmland and an art hub called Pasowna’s Farm, where they conduct various workshops in filmmaking and farming.
