After completing her formal education, Smita Prakash started working at the Asian News International as an intern in 1986. Later, she became a full time editor of the news agency.
She rose to immense fame as an ‘independent journalist’ after she interviewed Narendra Modi before the 2014 Indian General Elections.

She has also worked for several foreigner broadcasters including NPR News America and NHK Japan.
In 2005, she was chosen by Ministry of External Affairs as one of the two Indian journalists to attend joint press conferences between the prime ministers of India and the United States.
In September 2022, she started a podcast show named “ANI Podcast with Smita Prakash,” which was uploaded on the YouTube channel ANI News. In the first episode of the show, she interviewed the politician Jairam Ramesh.
On 13 October 2023, she attended the TEDxHinduCollege Women event, where she shared her inspiring stories.

She has anchored various news and current affairs shows such as ‘Ghoomta Aina’ on Zee TV and ‘Newsmakers’ on Doordarshan. The TV show ‘This week in India’ was one of her longest running show on television in South Africa.
