Smita Prakash grew up in New Delhi.

After completing her formal education, Smita Prakash started working at the Asian News International as an intern in 1986. Later, she became a full time editor of the news agency.
She rose to immense fame as an âindependent journalistâ after she interviewed Narendra Modi before the 2014 Indian General Elections.

She has also worked for several foreigner broadcasters including NPR News America and NHK Japan.
In 2005, she was chosen by Ministry of External Affairs as one of the two Indian journalists to attend joint press conferences between the prime ministers of India and the United States.
In September 2022, she started a podcast show named âANI Podcast with Smita Prakash,â which was uploaded on the YouTube channel ANI News. In the first episode of the show, she interviewed the politician Jairam Ramesh.
On 13 October 2023, she attended the TEDxHinduCollege Women event, where she shared her inspiring stories.

In 2024, she interviewed the social activist and politician Swati Maliwal , who alleged that she was physically assaulted by the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal âs personal assistant Bibhav Kumar at the residence of Kejriwal.

During her career as Journalist, she has reported news stories from the field in India for several foreign broadcasters including NPR News America and NHK Japan. She has also covered many of the worldâs most dangerous conflicts and devastating events.
She has anchored various news and current affairs shows such as âGhoomta Ainaâ on Zee TV and âNewsmakersâ on Doordarshan. The TV show âThis week in Indiaâ was one of her longest running show on television in South Africa.
She has been a director of several companies including Pacific News Private Limited, Yellow Gate Ventures Private Limited, and Asian Films TV Private Limited.
She is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer. She started taking formal training for it at the age of 11.
