Some Lesser Known Facts About Siang Lu
When he was four years old, Siang Luās family moved from Malaysia to Brisbane in the 1990s.
When he was a child, his parents paid close attention to what he needed. They wanted him to get a good education, do well with musical instruments, and attend church.
Siang Lu once talked about his childhood during a media interview. He said,
It was left to me to figure out who the fuck I was in terms of culture. Movies, TV shows, books, music ā the stuff you fill your head with to figure out who you are.ā
Lu works full-time in the technology industry.
His first novel, The Whitewash, was released in 2022.
The book tells the story of a made-up Hollywood film that tries to break stereotypes about Asians in the film industry.
The novel makes fun of the way people talk about diversity and representation in entertainment.
It was written like a pretend interview and featured mainly Asian-Australian actors in its audiobook. It has won the ABIA Audiobook of the Year award.

He has worked as a writer for TV shows on Malaysiaās Astro network.

In July 2025, he came into the limelight after winning Australiaās top literary prize, the Miles Franklin Literary Award, for his novel Ghost Cities and became the first male Asian writer to win the $60,000 literary prize. While receiving the award, he said,|
I am honoured beyond belief, and beyond words. I didnāt dare dream of this. It didnāt seem possible.ā
The story of Ghost Cities is about a young man named Xiang who loses his job at the Chinese consulate in Sydney when people find out that he cannot speak Chinese and only uses Google Translate. He then moves to a strange, empty, large city in China, known as a āghost city.ā
Before winning the Miles Franklin Literary Award, Ghost Cities was shortlisted for many other prizes, like the ALS Gold Medal and the Russell Prize for Humour Writing.
The book was also a finalist in several Queensland Literary Awards, including the Peopleās Choice.

Siang Lu lives in Brisbane, Australia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
His publisher once motivated him to create an Instagram account, but he was not sure what kind of posts he should share.
Siang Lu then created #sillybookstagram, a fun place where he playfully marks or alters books by his writer friends. Once, he talked about his Instagram page in the media. He said,

He regularly visits Kinokuniya Sydney and Readings, the biggest independent bookstore in Australia.
