Some Lesser Known Facts About Shweta Sehrawat
Shweta Sehrawat is an Indian cricketer. She plays for the Under-19 Indian women’s national cricket team. An all-rounder opening batsman, Shweta was named as the vice captain of Indian national women squad that competed in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup.
Shweta was raised by her parents in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.

In childhood, Shweta often used to accompany her elder sister to her cricket academy. Seeing other children train at the academy, Shweta too picked up the bat and copied their moves. In an interview, while talking about it, her father said,
I used to take my elder daughter (Swati) to Sonnet Cricket Club and Shweta would just accompany me. She would insist on playing with her sister, but I never gave it much attention because she was too young. A few months later, we shifted Swati to a cricket academy in Vasant Kunj. It was a boys’ academy and the coach asked one of them to bowl at Shweta with a tennis ball. I still remember her first shot, straight down the ground. For a seven-year-old playing fearlessly against the U-14 boys, I was shocked. Next day, I got her all the kits and her cricketing journey started.”

She trained at a cricket academy in Vasant Kunj, Delhi, for a few months, and then participated in the Delhi’s senior women’s trials. She was selected in the top 30. Shweta was 12 years old at that time.
Subsequently, Shweta made her place in the U-16 team of Delhi and scored her first U-16 fifty against Haryana.

She was then included in Delhi’s U-19 women’s team.
Soon, Shweta made her way to the Under-19 Indian women squad.
In November 2022, Sehrawat scored 163 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 111.64 in the U-19 T20 Challenger Trophy.
In the quadrangular series that featured West Indies, Sri Lanka, and two teams from India, Shweta scored 164 runs at a strike rate of 151.85, becoming the highest run-hitter of the tournament.
In 2022, Shweta captained the Indian women U-19 team that registered a 5-0 win over New Zealand in the domestic T20 Women’s U-19 trophy. She hit 180 runs in 6 matches at a strike rate of 129 in the tournament.

In 2023, when the senior Indian player Shafali Verma was named the skipper of the U-19 squad in the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, Shweta became the vice-captain. During a match against South Africa at Benoni on 14 January 2023, Shweta played an admirable innings, scoring 92 (not-out) off 57 balls. She slammed 20 boundaries in the match and was announced as the player of the match.

In an interview, Shweta’s father revealed that Shweta has got an aggressive style of batting as she played with boys for almost four years as there were only two girls in her cricket academy.
Shweta has received her cricket training from Deepti Dhyani at the Karnail Singh Stadium.
She idolizes the Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and Smriti Mandhana .
When Shweta started playing, she used to bat at no. 7. However, after great performances at the age-group cricket, she received an opportunity to play as an opening batsman.
In an interview, Shweta revealed that she almost lost the opportunity to get into the Indian women Under-19 squad due to her class 12 examinations. She said that her 12th examination dates clashed with the U-19 camp, scheduled from May 15 to June 9 and she decided to miss the cricket camp. She further shared that she wrote a letter to the former cricketer and head of National Cricket Academy (NCA), VVS Laxman, saying that she won’t make it to the camp due to her exams. However, Laxman, who had heard a lot about Sehrawat, persuaded her to attend the camp at least for a few days. On his insistance, Shweta went to the camp for a few days, playing several matches. In the last match of the camp, she scored a hundered and made her place in the National Cricket Academy’s zonal team.
In February 2023, she was sold to UP Warriorz for Rs 40 lakh in the inaugural WPL auction.
