She used to train with her elder brother, Shilakshi Singh, and the brother-sister duo would wake up early in the morning for their judo practice. They both used to cover a 25-30 minute journey to reach the judo academy with Shushila sitting on the bicycle carrier.

  • Shushila started her judo practice under the guidance of her uncle, Likmabam Dinit, an international judo player, and began participating in state and national level championships. • In 2017, Shushila joined the Manipur Police. She took permission from the Manipur Police authorities when she started training for her upcoming judo championships and tournaments. In 2019, Shushila won a silver medal at the Asian Open in Hong Kong.

  • In 2019, when Shushila was competing in Grand Slam in Osaka, Japan, she didn’t hear the announcement of her name. In an interview with The Indian Express, her brother said-

The rule is they’ll announce your name once and wait for 10 seconds. If you don’t show up then it’s over and the opponent gets a walkover. But Shushila was alone and the announcements were in Japanese. She didn’t realise they called her name. Woh bahar hi nahi nikle. Toh hum soche kya hua?”

  • Shushila had to withdraw from the qualifying rounds for the 2018 Asian Games as she pulled a hamstring before the trials had begun. Due to this, one of her sponsors ended ties with her, which affected her financial situation. She confronted her coach, Jiwan Sharma, with the fact that she was financially exhausted. Shushila had to take loans and sell her car to ease up the financial burden. During an interview, she said-

People from the village are very supportive. They love it when somebody does well in sports. It’s just that financially, nobody is really well to do there, so they can’t help.”

  • Even though Shushila missed several qualifying tournaments, she was qualified on the basis of the continental quota, making her the sole representative from India for judo in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
