His batting talent was first noticed by the former Indian cricketer and coach Pravin Amre at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana, Mumbai when Shreyas was 12 years old.

His initial cricket journey has been documented in the short film titled ‘Shreyas Iyer Documentary – A Father’s Dream.’
He made his List A debut for Mumbai in the 2014-2015 Vijay Hazare Trophy where he scored 273 runs at an average of 54.60.
The same year, he made his first-class cricket debut in the 2014-2015 Ranji Trophy where he scored 809 runs at an average of 50.56.
Due to his aggressive batting style, he is often called as the ‘Young Viru‘ i.e. Virender Sehwag .
