Some Lesser Known Facts About Shiva Thapa
Shiva Thapa is the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the AIBA World Boxing Championships.
He rose as early as 3:00 A.M in the morning in order to balance his studies with training.
His father had first enrolled him for Karate classes in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh but when their father realised that karate was not an Olympic sport he decided to turn him into a boxer.
He is the first Indian to sign the deal with a USA team in the World Series Boxing (WSB) of United State of America (USA).
He skips 3000 times, does 500 push-ups and 1000 crunches and runs 18 km every day.
Since the age of six, Shiva followed a regimented life – wake up at 3 am, run for 3 km and a mixture of a hundred push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups.
In spite of being a boxer in real life, he hates picking fights mostly because he knows that he will end up hurting someone if he got into a fistfight.
Apart from being a boxer, he is an employee of ONGC.
From their early days, Shiva and his elder brother Gobind followed their father’s schedule, which started as early as 3 am with a 2-hour homework session followed by a boxing training session at the Ulubari Boxing Club till 8 am, after that, they attended the school. The whole regime gave them just 5 hours of sleeping time.
He first showcased his boxing abilities in the year 2005 at the sub-junior National Boxing Championships held at Noida. He was to fight in 36 kg category but a misinformed official told that there was no such category and that he will have to fight in 38 kg category. For that, he drank a couple of litres of water, defeated the Services champion and won his first national Gold medal, leaving the officials spellbound with his performance in the ring.

He is one of only four Indian boxers who has won a world championship, other three being Vijender Singh , Vikas Krishan Yadav and Gaurav Bidhuri. They won bronze medals in 2009 (Milan), 2011 (Baku) and 2017 (Hamburg) respectively.
He has orthodox type boxing stance.
He registered a famous knockout over Morocco’s Mohamed Hamout in the pre-quarterfinal bout in World Championship. His coach Gurbaksh Singh Sandhu said it was the first time in his coaching career he had seen a knockout by an Indian boxer.
