Shimron hails from a modest family of the Canefield Settlement in East Canje who started accompanying his elder brother Seon to the Young Warriors Club ground at the age of 6.
He started playing the school-level cricket at the age of 9 for the Rose Hall Estate Primary School and Young Warriors Cricket Club.
He has always been highly athletic; as he used to easily beat his sprinting counterparts during the training at his school.
At the age of 16, he became a talk of the town when he scored a century in a first-class match.

He had a nightmare batting display at the 2014 U-19 World Cup; as he got dismissed for a duck in 3 out of 5 innings he played.
He has had the leadership skills since his school days; as he first captained at the school-level when he was in 4th form (10th standard) and continued it in Guyana Under-15, Under-17, and West Indies Under-19.
Under his leadership, the West Indies Under-19 team had won their first Under-19 World Cup title in Bangladesh in 2016.
