  • He made his first-class debut on 15 April 2017 for Guyana against the Windward Islands at Providence, Rhode Island, New England in the 2016–17 Regional Four-Day Competition.

  • In June 2018, he got selected to play for West Indies B in the Global T20 Canada tournament. He was the highest runscorer for West Indies B and scored 230 runs in eight matches.

  • In the 2018 T10 Cricket League, he scored 46 runs off 21 balls for Bengal Tigers.

  • He scored 2 runs off 6 deliveries in his first T20I match for West Indies against Bangladesh on 22 December 2018.

  • He went unsold in the 2021 IPL auction for his base price of Rs 75 lakh. He later joined SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a replacement player for the English player Jonny Bairstow during the second leg of IPL 2021 in Dubai.

  • In the 2022 IPL mega auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) acquired Rutherford for his base price of Rs 1 crore. He was released by RCB before the 2023 IPL auction where he later went unsold.
