Some Lesser Known Facts About Sheikh Rehana
Sheikh Rehana grew up in a family with a political background in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
In 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation War, Rehana, along with her family, was kept under house arrest in Dhanmondi by the Pakistan Army.

In 1975, while she, along with her sister Hasina , went to Germany to meet Hasina’s husband M. A. Wazed Miah in Karlsruhe, her other family members were killed in their home on 15 August in a military coup by the Bangladesh Army. Rehana was just 20 years old at that time.
Soon after the incident, the Indian authorities reached Germany to bring Sheikh Hasina, her husband, children, and sister Sheikh Rehana to India, where they were given political asylum.

Rehana, along with her sister and her sister’s family, lived on Delhi’s Pandara Road under a fake identity for some time. Later, she moved to London.
She helped her sister to form a public opinion abroad, demanding justice for their family. Rehana, along with her sister Hasina, campaigned in various European countries, seeking justice for their father. In 1979, Rehana held the first international conference in Sweden to call for an impartial trial on her father’s murder.
In 1981, Rehana, along with her sister Hasina, returned to Bangladesh, where her sister led the Bangladesh Awami League.
Although Rehana was not very active in politics, she supported her sister during every crisis of the Awami League.
In 2001, the government of Bangladesh allotted her a government house in Dhanmondi for a token amount of 100 taka.
In 2007, when her sister was put behind bars under the emergency rule of Fakhruddin Ahmed’s military-backed government, Sheikh Rehana worked secretly to bring back a democratically elected government in the country.
In 2014, Rehana was allotted a house in Gulshan by the government of Bangladesh for a token of 1001 taka.
As her family was brutally assassinated in 1975, Sheikh Rehana and her children were given lifelong protection through the Special Security Force by the government of Bangladesh. The government also announced free utility for Rehana and her family in 2015.
In 2016, she became the councillor of Awami League Dhaka South unit.
Her husband, Shafique Ahmed Siddique, is a retired professor of the Department of Accounting & Information Systems, Faculty of Business Studies (FBS), University of Dhaka.
Rehana’s daughter, Tulip Siddiq, is a British Labour Party politician and elected Member of Parliament and City Minister.
She is often seen with her sister Sheikh Hasina on various official trips like the state funeral of Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom in 2022 and the Coronation of Charles III and Camilla in 2023.

On 5 August 2024, after her sister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh, amid protests, Hasina and Rehana fled Bangladesh and moved to India.
