| Controversy | Accused of Corruption: In 2001, Sharmila Faruqui and her father Usman Faruqui, former chairman of Pakistan Steel Mills, were accused of embezzlement of Rs 195 billion from Pakistan Steel Mills and Government of Pakistan. The officers of National Accountability Bureau, Federal Investigation Agency, and Karachi Electric Supply Corporation investigated Faruqui and her family after they failed to pay electricity bills of Rs. 1 million. Later, Sharmila's mother, Anisa Faruqui, entered into a plea bargain with NAB, under which they were disqualified from holding any public office for 21 years. |

Sharmila Faruqui grew up in a prominent political family in Karachi.

Growing up, she liked playing Dulhan Dulhan, dressing up as a bride often.
In a social media post, Sharmila shared that when she was 16 years old, she was once arrested by the police and thrown in a lock-up.

Her father, Usman Farooqi, served as the chairman of Pakistan Steel Mills from 1981 to 1996. He passed away in 2021.
Before stepping into politics, Sharmila worked as an actress for a while. She was featured in the drama serial “Panchwa Mausam,” starring Aijaz Aslam, Talat Hussain, Abdullah Kadwani, and Gulab Chandio.
A few years after joining the Pakistan Peoples Party, Sharmila Faruqui, became an adviser to the chief minister of Sindh without a portfolio.

During the tenure of Qaim Ali Shah as the Chief Minister of Sindh, Sharmila was given the responsibility of media management.
Sharmila Faruqui met Hashaam Riaz Sheikh for the first time during a cabinet meeting in 2010. The duo instantly fell in love with each other. They then dated for a few years before getting married in 2015.
In 2015, on her wedding day, Sharmila went to cast her vote for the senate elections before she reached her wedding venue.
Sharmila’s wedding with Hashaam in 2015 is considered one of the most expensive wedding’s in Pakistan.
Her husband, Hashaam, is an advisor to Asif Ali Zardari and a spokesperson for Bilawal Bhutto (as of 2024).

As of 2024, she is a Member of the National Assembly (MNA) of Pakistan.
A writer by passion, Sharmila has written many columns in the English newspaper The News International.
