Various Indian celebrities such as Divya Bharti , Farhan Akhtar , and Ritesh Sidhwani were his classmates in the 1984 batch at Maneckji Cooper Education Trust School in Mumbai.

Sharman followed his fatherâs footsteps and started his career as a theatre artist. Initially, he performed at the theatre named Thakorbhai Desai Hall, Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He has performed theatre plays in different languages such as Gujarati, Hindi, English, and Marathi. Some of his popular theatre plays are âAll the Best,â âAme Layi Gaya, Tame Rahi Gaya,â and âMain Aur Tum.â

He participated in the all-India talent hunt contest titled âStar Trackâ in 1996. The contest was organised by ABCL (Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited). Sharman was selected among the top 9 boys in the contest.
He acted in the popular Hindi TV serial âGubbareâ in 1999.
In 2001, he gained immense popularity with the Hindi film âStyleâ in which he was cast along with the Indian actor and fitness entrepreneur Sahil Khan .

He started a film production company named âSharman Joshi Productionsâ on 26 August 2014.
In 2017, he directed and acted in a theatre play âThe Play That Goes Wrongâ in collaboration with a UK-based company. During an interview, he talked about it, he said,
It just so happens that the producers of the play and I were looking for each other. They [the producers] knew of me and my plays. I am excited to bring the play to India by November end. We will have a four-month rehearsal and we intend to make it in three languages â English, Gujarati and Marathi. Itâs going to be a never-seen-before act on the Indian theatre circuit. We will have actors jumping off 10ft-high platforms and flying in the air, as the play has a lot of action-based comedy.â

In an interview, in 2018, he shared that when he asked for the pay-rise for the sequel of the Hindi film âGolmaal Fun Unlimitedâ (2006), he was replaced by some other actor. check sources Hindustan Times He said,
The producers âthrew me outâ of the Golmaal series after negotiations to increase the remuneration did not work out. I think second part mein mere manager aur producers ki kuch negotiations mein gadbad ho gayi (in the second part, the negotiations between my manager and the producers did not work out). And I couldnât be a part of it.â
He added,
My manager was negotiating. I think some egos were ruffled and it came down to me not doing the film. Before that happened, I actually made a request that would still want to be a part of the film. I said negotiations happenâŠhe was trying his best as a manager for me. He was trying to negotiate the best that he could. But I said, it doesnât need to come down to this. But I guess by then it was already too late, they had to go ahead with the choice they had made which I understand and respect.â

Sharman loves Gujarati culture. In an interview, while talking about it, he said,
I give a lot of credit to my Gujarati roots for the purity in my art. I feel in Gujarati culture, children are taught the importance of tehzeeb, probably a bit more than I have noticed in other cultures. Stress is given on respecting your elders and the importance of their presence in your lives. Apart from this aspect, Gujarati people are passionate about their festivals. Also, as a Gujarati, I donât think our personality is complete without food. And my love for Gujarati cuisine is intact because of my motherâs cooking.â
He loves travelling and reading books in his leisure time.

I am a âcorruptâ Gujarati Brahmin, one whoâs eaten non-vegetarian food all his life. I have tried it all â grasshoppers, earthworms, crocodile meat. Although I donât have any real cravings, I like indulging in Chinese or Thai food every now and then.â
