Some Lesser Known Facts About Shanti Bhushan
Shanti Bhushan was a politician and eminent jurist who served as the Law Minister of India from 1977 to 1979 in the Morarji Desai-led government. He was a senior advocate at the Supreme Court of India.
He grew up in a family with a law background in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh.
Bhushan developed a keen interest in law and reasoning at a young age and decided to pursue law as his career.
A crusader in the courtroom, Shanti had fought several commercial and criminal cases. He had even took up several cases of public interest.
Bhushan often ended up surprising senior advocates and his opposition in legal battles with his exceptional analytical skills.
His analogies were generally made up of elements of honesty and simplicity, which made his submissions easily understandable even to a layman.
One of the highest-paid lawyers in India, it was Shanti Bhushan who set up the trend of charging high-fee even for cases of public interest.
Some of his Prominent cases include:
1. Shanti Bhushan appeared as a counsel for the maverick socialist leader Raj Narain at the Allahabad High Court against the then-Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. Apparently, after losing the Lok Sabha elections in Rae Bareilly, Raj Narain accused Gandhi of electoral malpractices, which was proved in the Allahabad High Court by Shanti Bhushan. Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha in his verdict declared Gandhi’s election to the Lok Sabha void and also disqualified her from contesting the elections for six years. The historical judgement caused Gandi to declare a National Emergency.
2. In 1994, Bhushan represented two men accused of being a part of the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.
3. In 2002, he represented Arundhati Roy in a contempt case against her in the Supreme Court of India.
4. Shanti Bhushan represented Rajendra Singh Lodha regarding the assets of the Birla Corporation.Shanti Bhushan stepped into politics by joining the Indian National Congress (Organisation).
In 1977, he represented Raj Narain in Allahabad High Court and successfully proved the electoral malpractices of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, leading Gandi to impose a National Emergency. After the Emergency was lifted, Shanti Bhushan was appointed as the Law Minister of India in the Morarji Desai government. He served as the Law Minister till 1979.
From 14 July 1977 to 2 April 1980, Shanti Bhushan served as a Member of the Rajya Sabha.
He was a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party from 1980 to 1986.
Shanti Bhushan was associated with the 2011 corruption movement led by the social activist Anna Hazare. Subsequently, he associated himself with the Aam Aadmi Party and became one of its founding members. Bhushan was associated with AAP for three years.
Reportedly, Shanti Bhushan made a donation of Rs. 1 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party when the party was formed. check sources The Indian Express
