Shanawas made his acting debut with the 1981 Malayalam film Premageethangal, in which he appeared alongside actress Ambika.

He then went on to work in many films such as Koritharicha Naal (1982), Velichamillatha Veedhi (1984), Kanyakumari Express (2010), Kumbasaram (2015), and March Randam Vyazham (2019).
Shanawas has also acted in various Malayalam television shows, including Kadamattathu Kathanar (2004), Vikramadithyan, Sathyameva Jayathe, and Manasariyathe.
He acted with his father in seven movies, including Ivan Oru Simham (1982).

His elder son, Shameer Khan, acted in the 2011 Malayalam film Uppukandam Brothers Back in Action but was not successful. Later, Shameer worked as a Manager and Vlogger in Malaysia.
His last film was Jana Gana Mana in 2022, in which Prithviraj was the main actor.
Shanawas acted in more than 50 Malayalam and Tamil films.

He lived in Malaysia. His wife, Ayisha Beevi, is the daughter of Suleikha Beevi, who was the eldest sister of his father, Prem Nazir.
