Some Lesser Known Facts About Seemanth Kumar Singh
Seemanth Kumar Singh was born and raised in Pakaria, a small village in the Shambhuganj subdivision of Banka district in Bihar, India.
He was raised in a middle-class family.
Seemanth Kumar completed his early education at a local school in the Banka district, Bihar and high secondary from Ranchi, Jharkhand.
In 1992, Seemanth moved to Delhi and completed his graduation at Delhi University.
After graduating, Singh began preparing for the UPSC examination. He is from the 1996 batch of the Indian Police Service.
Singh began his professional career in the Karnataka cadre in 1996.
In December 2000, Singh was appointed as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Dakshina Kannada, where he served until February 2004. His time serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) was one of the longest tenures in the district.
When he was the superintendent, he had shown extraordinary ability in handling law and order situations, particularly during the communal riots.
From 2004 to 2010, he served as Superintendent of Police in the Bellary district.
When he was serving SP in the Bellary district, he was linked to the powerful Reddy brothers, who were involved in illegal mining there. He was also known as “Bellary Reddy’s man” because people thought he was helping them. After all, he didn’t take action against their activities right away. Even the government tried to transfer him, but the Reddy brothers helped him keep his job.
However, later, Singh’s investigations were crucial in uncovering the Reddy brothers’ activities, resulting in widespread recognition of his efforts to deal with corruption.
After that incident, Seemanth was transferred with a promotion to the rank of deputy inspector general of police (DIG) to Mangalore city.
In 2010, he was appointed as the first Commissioner of Police for the newly established Mangalore Police Commissionerate, focusing on creating the framework of the commissionerate and improving policing standards.
In May 2013, Kumar served as the Superintendent of Police for the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) headquartered in Udupi, Karnataka. During his service tenure, he mainly focused on counter-insurgency operations in Naxal-affected areas.
In 2014, Seemanth Kumar Singh was recognised for his dedication and contributions to the police service and honoured with the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service on Republic Day.
In late 2014, Seemanth returned to Mangalore city as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the Western Range, where he oversaw multiple districts in coastal Karnataka. and served there till May 2019.
In 2015, Seemanth also served as the Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (KSPH&IDCL), Ramakrishnanagar, Mysuru, Karnataka, where he oversaw the infrastructure projects for the police department.
In June 2019, Singh was appointed as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Administration, Chief Office, Bengaluru and Additional Commissioner of Police (East) in Bengaluru.
After one year in June 2020, he was appointed as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Central Range, Bengaluru.
In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Seemanth shared his personal number as a helpline for migrant workers from North India. In addition to helping these individuals return to their native places, he also provided food and essential supplies to thousands of stranded labourers.
In an interview, Singh mentioned that during that time, he used to receive around 4,000 to 5,000 calls daily and tried to respond to all the calls and messages.
During the second wave of COVID-19, Singh and his friends donated around 100 oxygen concentrators to taluk and village hospitals across 17 districts in Karnataka, with the aim of alleviating the oxygen shortage. Singh had started a crowdfunding campaign to purchase oxygen concentrators from across the world.
In 2021, he was appointed as the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for the Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force.
On June 3, 2025, in the wake of a tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, Seemanth Kumar Singh was appointed as the Commissioner of Police for Bengaluru City.
