Her parents were from different family backgrounds. Her mother was a Hindu from Mysore, Karnataka, and her father was a Syed Muslim from Deoria, Uttar Pradesh.

Her mother, Sumitra Chishti, was an economist at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and later became its director. After that, she moved to Jawaharlal Nehru University as a professor.
Seema Chishti has been a multimedia journalist since 1990, working in print, radio, and television in both English and Hindi.
Once, in a media interview, her husband, Sitaram Yechury mentioned that his wife, Seema Chishti, financially supports him.
She worked with the HTV news channel from 1990 to 1993.
In 1994, she joined BBC World Service in London and worked there till 1996.
Seema Chishti served as the Editor for BBC Hindi in Delhi from 1996 to 2006.
In 2006, she began working as a Senior Editor at The Indian Express and served in the position till 2020.
During this period, she published stories on issues including the marginalization of minority communities, cultural change, youth, and major political events in India.
Later, she was appointed as the Editor of the Indian newspaper The Wire.

Apart from being a journalist, she is also an author. In 2018, she co-authored a book, ‘Note by Note: The India Story (1947-2017),’ which narrated the history of independent India from 1947 to 2017, alongside Hindi film music for each year.

At the Frame Conclave in 2019, she presented a social and political perspective. She suggested that the Right to Information could also be seen as a Right to Space.

In 2021, Chishti shared a screenshot of a media headline that showed a quote from RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat . She questioned if the term ‘Mukt’ in ‘Congress-Mukt-Bharat’ meant ‘death.’ She misinterpreted Bhagwat’s quote and used it to mock Hinduism while referencing the RSS.
