According to Sayanora, she faced racial discrimination when she was a child. In an interview, she revealed, unlike other girls with fair skin, Sayanora never received a love letter. She believed that no one would ever like her. Sayanora, however, learned to play the guitar and since then she did not feel ignored as people started observing her. Sayanora, in the interview, said,
There were times I felt conscious when a fair skin woman stood next to me. As a child, I used to compare myself with kids who were fair and check how many shades darker I am. While in school, I used to see people flirting around my friends and not me, which made me think nobody would ever fall for me. I didnāt receive love letters and as a child, I felt hopeless about life. I started playing guitar and people started noticing me. And that was the beginning of me finding self-love. Sayanora explained how facing discrimination in childhood affected her in the long term. She added that she was so disturbed by her struggling childhood that when she gave birth to her child, the first thing she asked the doctor was about her childās colour as she earlier wished to give birth to a fair child so that the child would not face the same thing which Sayanora did as a child. While talking about this in an interview, Sayanora Philip said,
I was insecure to the point, where I wanted to give birth to a fair child. I wasnāt able to wrap my head around the fact that what all the child would go through for the skin color. The first thing I asked the doctor, after giving birth to my child was her colour. I didnāt ask if the baby was a boy or a girl. I wanted to know whether my child was fair. Looking back, I feel so sorry for her and myself because I was conditioned to think like that. And nobody should go through that. Every teenage girl should be proud of her body.
