On 8 July 2013, she was crowned Miss Collegiate America 2013 in Orlando, Florida.
In October 2015, she became Miss Heart of the Ozarks 2016.
She grew up in a health-conscious family. However, she did not realise the importance of healthy eating until college. Midnight pizzas and ice cream runs made her terribly sick. Therefore, she started advocating for healthy eating with the #EatBetterLiveBetter campaign, which later became her Miss America platform.

On 9 July 2016, she was crowned Miss Arkansas 2016.

On 12 September 2016, she was crowned Miss America 2017 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. As the winner, Shields received a $50,000 college scholarship. Miss South Carolina Rachel Wyatt was the first runner-up and Miss New York, Camille Sims was the second runner-up in the pageant.

She received the Preliminary Talent Award, along with a $2,000 scholarship, during the Miss America 2017 pageant. She impressed the judges with her jazz dance routine on the song, āThey Just Keep Moving the Lineā from the TV show Smash.
She is the third Miss Arkansas to win the Miss America title after Donna Axum in 1964 and Elizabeth Ward in 1982.
She has served as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Childrenās Miracle Network Hospitals.
