Some Lesser Known Facts About Satish Kumar
Satish Kumar is an Indian pugilist who competes in the super heavyweight (+91 Kg) category.
He grew up in a middle-class family in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh.
Satish was good at sports like cricket and hockey in his childhood but never thought of making a career in sports.
Satish got inspired by his elder brother (who was serving in the Indian army) to join the Indian army.
In 2008, Satish joined the Indian army as a Sepoy.
While he was posted in Ranikhet, Uttrakhand, Satish came to the attention of the boxing coaches for his height during a boxing camp. They urged him to try his luck in boxing.
At that time, Satish was not aware of what boxing actually meant. He confused boxing with WWE. In an interview, while telling an amusing fact, he said,
I heard about boxing for the first time in 2008. Otherwise, I used to think that WWE is boxing. I knew Undertaker and John Cena but not real boxing.”
He was 19 years old when he started his professional boxing career.
Satish participated in various local and state-level boxing competitions for two years and made his debut at the national level when he was 21 years old.
In 2011, he participated in the Senior National Boxing Championships and won a silver medal.
The next year, he won a gold medal by defeating Praveen Kumar in the finals of the Indian National Championships.

In 2013, Satish participated Korotkov Memorial Tournament in Russia and won a bronze medal.
Subsequently, he represented India at ASBC Asian Continental Championships in Amman, Jordan (2013).

The same year, he took part in the AIBA World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan. However, he was disqualified from the event after his pre-quarterfinal bout due to an injury. He won a silver at the event.
He then won two bronze medals; one at the 2014 Asian Games held in Icheon and the other at the 2015 Asian Boxing Championships in Bangkok.

His career saw a downfall at the 2016 Rio Olympics when he was ruled out of the game due to an injury.
Satish won a silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Kumar then participated in the Grand Prix Ustinad Labem in the Czech Republic and won a gold medal (2018).
Satish won the ticket to the Tokyo Olympics in March 2020; becoming the first Indian heavyweight boxer (91kg category) to ever qualify for an Olympics. The Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Apart from boxing, he is also serving in the Indian army. Satish is included in the Indian government’s Target Olympics Podium Scheme (TOPS). He is also associated with JWS Sports.
In his spare time, Kumar loves listening to music.
He is a fitness enthusiast and hits the gym daily.

In 2018, Satish received the Arjuna Award by the Government of India for his contribution to boxing.

He gives the credit of his success to the Indian army. In an interview, he said,
If it wasn’t for the army, I don’t think I would be where I am now. I come from a place where not many set goals for themselves early in life but after I joined the army, I got the direction.”
