She is known for her work in Telegu, Tamil, Malayalam and few Kannada films.
She was born and brought up in a Christian family in Alappuzha, Kerala.
She has acted in a Hindi film Chup: Revenge of the Artist as Nila’s mother in 2022.
She took a break from acting in 1996 after her marriage.
In 2000, she appeared playing the lead role in the comedy television series, Veettukku Veedu Lootty, and she also appeared in some supporting roles in other projects.
After taking a long gap of 8 years from films, she then made a came back in 2003, she featured in a Tamil film Alai opposite Raghuvaran as Silambarasan’s mother.
She is famous for playing the role of mother to many actors including Jiiva , Dhanush, Sivakarthikeyan , and Udhayanidhi Stalin . She once shared that even the people on sets call her ‘amma’ rather than ma’am. She has also played many lead roles in her younger age.
She denied lead roles in many films because she was not comfortable wearing tight clothes and short dresses and she does not regret her decision. She has never worn sleeveless dresses.
During 2006 she appeared in family-drama serial Mugangal, which aired on Sun TV.
In 2014, she launched Design & School of Fashion Technology (DSOFT), a fashion institute at Virugamakkam, Chennai.
In 2016, she played a role of a villain in the film Achamindri (2016).
